Que sera, sera…

whatever will be will be this year. We are less than a week into 2016 and I’m feeling pretty good about it. I have decided that it has a lot to do with how I brought in the New Year. After a gorgeous dinner at Morton’s in Georgetown with my parents, also celebrating my Auntie Steph’s good health, my roommate, my manmate and I headed across town to Brookland to Sahra‘s lovely home. It was so nice to a) not have to be outside in the cold waiting to get in somewhere b) not get get totes drunj at an overpriced bar where I likely had to dropkick someone to even get served c) spend the evening with good people, good food, and maybe a little too much champagne.

Sahra and Z had a great spread and cute little party games looking back on trivia from the past year. They also had this little bowl of questions for each of us to look back at our own years- favorite songs, moments, trips, etc. That was definitely my favorite! I also want to thank everyone for humoring me with my new toy- my camera stayed around my neck most of the night, although I’m not sure why I didn’t use it at all with the photo booth they set up.

It was kind of cool- we did the count down to 2016 twice: once one someone’s phone counting down the minutes and then again on a laggy phone feed of the ball dropping. #somillennial

I think this is about how I want to spend the first night of the new year forever. It was just so… nice.

Maybe next year I’ll know how to use my camera and think to get a picture of my outfit. I did look pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

Thanks again for having us- and letting us love of your fur babies! I hope everyone else had a great start to the new year as well!

#WCW: Christine of Maple & Mint

mail.google.com2You already met Christine of Maple & Mint when we decided to do a little collaboration a bit ago showing off our styling of black + white, but what you may not know is that I actually found her via The Blogger Collective. It was actually kind of a funny thing- the collective sends out a monthly email with challenges for their bloggers, and it happened to prompt a collaboration with other members of the collective. I went through a list of the other members and hit up the first 5 that had names that caught my eye, sight unseen. Christine actually answered me right back and we did our own little piece together. I stay following her blog because 1. homegirl is from LA and it’s fun to have cross-continental connections & 2. her style is so fresh and easy, I guess that comes from West-coasting it! I was also quite tickled that her #NSale picks were very similar to mine! I’m excited to learn a little more about her and hopefully do a few more collabs!

10. 1 quote to live by
Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground. – Rumi

Keeping it real

So… let’s get a little personal with this one. I’m not, never was, and will never be, one of those, “peony-macaron-bright-gold-sparkly-BRANDING-BRANDING-BRANDING-LOOK AT ME I’M A BRAND!”, as Erin put it, girls. When I looked over this particular group of pictures, I just kept thinking, “I look fat. My hair looks awful. This is not flattering.” You know, all those things that girls tell themselves on the reg because media loves to show us how we should look by using photo shop and makeup artists.

Side-note- ended up not really using this shoot because my roots were an abomination and not indicative of how great my Jenn is. In the meantime, I just got my hair done so I’m all good now.

There is no mold that I can fit into besides the Caro-shaped one that I have molded and re-molded over the years. And I like it that way, most of the time. I still use my dinosaur backpack, sometimes along side my gorgeous Ralph Lauren tote. When I was in high school, I had a boyfriend call me emo because I was wearing a tutu, band t shirt, and rainbow Uggs. Rain. Bow. Uggs. That I adored because they were candy colored and special edition and I stood out. In fact, I straddled the fence of wanting to stand out and wanting to fit in my entire life, and I’m finally (mostly) confident in just being.

But sometimes when I see all the pretty bloggers I get a little bit of the 16 year old back and I stress for just a second. But I just have to breathe and realize I will never look good in boyfriend jeans, Blair is on a totally different level than I will ever be on, and my hair will never hold a curl. I don’t particularly like peonies and I’ve never had a macaron. Tutus are fantastic in theory but aren’t super flattering and can you wear them on the reg? #shnope. Yea, I’d love to make my blog a business, but I haven’t really formulated a brand yet and I have, you know, a 9-5 where I’m trying to make some moves first. I may or may not have cried a little when I ended up on a particularly nasty thread on a website that I will not name.

I am a person. And I’m just trying to figure it all out. In the meantime, you can bet that I will stay true to myself.

Until then, this picture is great because I’m actually smiling. I real, goofy smile because that sign weighed a ton and I’m trying to move it in what is essentially a tutu. Because I am Caroline, I’m a little weird, and that’ll happen sometimes.

#WCW: Currently Coveting

10190538625_6f49253f68_bI’ve been following Erin of Currently Coveting since I got a bloglovin’ feed and could actually keep any sort of track of who I was actually following. Since I consider myself a partial Jersey girl after attending Rider, I think it’s great that not only is she a Jersey to DC transplant, but that she loves it here! Like LBC1, she’s “mainly fashion, food, and beauty focused” but occasionally goes “off the grid like all the time so don’t get too used to any one thing.” Although I love her style, TBH, she’s really my WCW because of this amazing post she did on authenticity a few weeks back. LBC1 is still less than a year old, and I hope I never lose my real voice. One of my friends actually said she likes to read my posts because they sound exactly like I talk. Well, yea. Why wouldn’t they? This is my blog for meeee and if people like it- awesome! I may change and evolve over time, but losing myself completely would be totally against the point of having my blog in the first place. This is my favorite part of what she said, but I suggest bloggers and non-bloggers alike read the whole thing:

I have started to notice this “peony-macaron-bright-gold-sparkly-BRANDING-BRANDING-BRANDING-LOOK AT ME I’M A BRAND!” wash over everything and while some of that was once was fresh and beautiful to me and I get why it is sometimes necessary, it basically induces an internal cringe. Maybe I follow too many blogs, boutiques, and websites now for my own good and I am simply inundating myself, I don’t know, I just keep waiting to feel something from them again aside from that knee-jerk eye roll.

Sigh. I think I just said the thing you’re not supposed to say as a blogger.

For the record- daffodils & daisys > peonies any day. And can I say she chose on of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite authors? Can we be friends? I think we should be friends.

#WCW: Lemon Stripes

striped-dress-2I am so. freaking. excited. to bring you this week’s WCW, Julia of Lemon Stripes. I love her preppy, bright sense of style, but I knew I loved her as a person when this post came up on my bloglovin’ feed. Girl, I feel ya on all accounts and my uncle Matt thought it was hilare that the little tattoo on my ankle hurt more than the giant chest piece he got at the same time. She just made the opposite of my big move- moving out of New York City and into the ‘burbs. She’s braver than I am about mixing patterns, but pretty consistently I feel like I could wear whatever it is she’s making fabulous for the day. Her style is accessible, clean, and fun. Plus, she understands that leggings can be pants if styled appropriately, which is a battle I will fight until my dying day. I look forward too seeing more of her layered styles as it gets rapidly colder. She’s definitely a blogger to keep your eye on for chic ways to stay cozy.

#WCW: A dash of gold

leopard+print+at+workThe first time I met Nicole, it was an INSTANT girl crush, based on her outfit alone. (striped pencil skirt and a sweater with a heart on it- I just requested an outfit post from her on the exact outfit because it was so cute so don’t you worry your pretty little heads) Then I found out she worked at my Alma-mater, GW, then I saw her arm party perfection. Combined with her genuine sweetness and the fact that she’s a fellow GLAMazon, I just really like her! I would describe her style as polished-All-American. It looks like our office-attire dress codes are pretty much the same, so I love checking out her blog for real-life outfit inspiration. Plus, she rocks some very classy animal print- which I adore.
I honestly can’t believe it took me so long to get my act together an make her my official #wcw of the week! It probably has something to do with us both being busy DC girls on the go. She just moved for the 4th time in two years! And as I’m getting ready to move out for the first time, which you’re probably all tired of hearing about, I feel like I have someone to talk to when I’m crying in my new apartment because where are my nail clippers?!?
Be on the lookout for a little bitty dash of gold partnership on the horizon as I make my big move into the city and do some reworking of LBC1 😉 Literally as I’m putting this post together we’re texting and she gave me an awesome idea that has us both so pumped.

#WCW: Pink Champagne Problems

print-and-blazerI started following Dana when I noticed her commenting on LBC1. It was refreshing to see an NYC blogger and someone who wasn’t a friend of a friend and connected to me in some way- although I can see this girl going big and ending up recognized nation-wide. I admire her drive and maturity as someone who just graduated from college. And she has an awesome job, doing what she loves/ hanging out with gorgeous man-models. She’s classy, but not stuffy, and approaches fashion in a very real way. Nothing about her is forced but she’s still fabulous, and I wanted to know more about her!

PS, Dana, obsessed that you know the difference between cognac and brown because I was literally just made fun of by my family for this!

#WCW: Bree of Bree West

DSC_0176-1024x685I met Bree at the last Blogger Scene event, when I was feeling weirdly shy and so out of place. There was a lot going on and we didn’t really get a chance to talk, so I was really glad we work close enough to each other we could have a Friday lunch date to catch up! It turns out she’s another former sorority president with a love of crisp fall weather and sushi. And I love her as a person! Homegirl just bought a place herself, and has inspired me to do my 101 in 1001 (it’s not up yet- for some reason, I’m having a hard time picking out 101 things I need to do). Check hers out here. She was also the first person I ran my BGBS idea by, and because I told her, I’m getting really serious about starting it, once everything is calmed down with me moving, of course. [Sidebar: that now makes at least five DC bloggers moving within 2 months: Que Sera Sahra, First Impressions, A Dash of Gold, Bree, and myself, bringing up the caboose of moving shenanigans.] Hopefully our chance meeting will turn into a partnership of sorts. I also just have to say that I adore the clean layout of her blog! It’s so crisp! If you’re looking to follow another DC lady, I would say Bree’s blog is a must- and I’m not just saying that because the first time I visited the blog I was greeted with my favorite building in the entire city!

Another Firefly fan!

#WCW: Kristyn of First Impressions

IMG_2766I’m not entirely sure when or how I started following First Impressions, but Kristyn struck me as being something that I have never quite managed: a perfect lady. Yes, my mom’s family is originally from SC, and yes, my Jersey friends saw me as southern, but I never quite made it to the game day, perfect hair, sweet tea-ness that Kristyn just is. I met her as I was literally running out the door of the Blogger Scene event, and even just meeting her for a second, she was just so sweet and genuine! (One might say she made a great first impression 😉 ) And after reading her WCW answers, I literally just want to be her best friend, in hopes that some of her sweet (I keep using that word- sorry. Not really.) sparkle will rub off on me. This is the first WCW I’ve done where I actually even want to make commentary, because I am on the same page as her with SO. MANY. THINGS. My comments are italicized.

6. Ho Hey by The Lumineers
7. We Can’t Stop by Miley Cyrus (she’s crazy, but you gotta love her music)
8. Somethin’ Bad by the two badest ladies in town, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert
9. Daughters by John Mayer (will dance to this with my Father at my wedding someday)
10. Honey I’m Home by Shania Twain (probably the first song I remember ever listening to and the only song I know every word of!) (I once did a tap routine to this in a red sequined cowgirl outfit. Lawd.)

IMG_36885 people who have impacted your life?
1. My parents – they’ve always helped me achieve my hopes and dreams, and have never told me I can’t do something. They support me through anything, and because of them I am who I am today.
2. My grandmother, Nancy Royster… she is the epitome of a true Southern woman. I’ve never met a better cook, someone more poised and elegant, and a true Godly woman.
3. My high school yearbook teacher – if it wasn’t for her constructive criticism and my rejection of becoming yearbook editor-in-chief, I wouldn’t have the determination to prove people wrong. While I was extremely bummed at first, it was my first lesson that life isn’t easy. All you can do is take that rejection and let it fuel you for the future. I’ve never looked back since!
4. Courtney Kerr – it may sound stupid, but if it wasn’t for watching her on Bravo’s Courtney Loves Dallas, I wouldn’t have started my blog. It impacted me because well, I wouldn’t be doing this interview if it wasn’t for her!

2. Stop trying to make ear cuffs happen… it’s not going to happen.
3. Jeans are never an appropriate form of dress for a wedding or Church. (CAN I GET AN AMEN!?)
BONUS-I’m going to throw in one more… E-vites are not an appropriate form of invitation for formal
gatherings. If I get one more wedding e-vite, I will scream. (Girl. This is a thing?!?)

2 things that scare you?
1. Deep Water… Probably my biggest fear in life, which is very ironic seeing as I was a competitive
swimmer for almost 12 years.
2. Not accomplishing everything I want to do. There are so many things I’ve already been blessed with or have accomplished, but the list of stuff I haven’t grows every day.

Lauren Anne of DC Girl in Pearls has been one of my favorite DC bloggers for quite some time, ever since I saw a picture of her in candy pink Hunter boots. Locally, not many of us celebrate our inner (and outer) prepsters like she does! Her style is classic, sophisticated, fresh, and fun! Not only do I love her clothes/ accessories/ look in general, but she features awesome recipes and cocktails. Plus, as a (hopefully very soon) future actual resident of DC, I love her little decorating tips. And apparently we both have an affinity for pop music and brunch, so I’m really excited to meet her next week. 😉
